South Lake Middle School has been working to create a healthier school community. The Student Action Team (SAT) members and teacher champion Mrs. Cynthia Boylan have designed their interpretation of the 5210 program in creative art posters which were posted in their school cafeteria. One way the students are engaging in that 5210 message is encouraging their school to think of their first meal of the day — breakfast. A healthy breakfast is beneficial, which is a good way to start the day. The SAT members demonstrated that by having a breakfast tasting one morning at the school. The SAT members, with the help of the South Lake Middle School’s food service offered a food tasting consisted of yogurt, fruits and granola for breakfast on January 23. Some SAT members came to school very early to volunteer for this event. Many students said “they really enjoyed the yogurt and would love to have this as an option in the future.” It was a wonderful example of 5210 and Fuel Up to Play 60!
These health initiatives show that SAT members understand the importance of eating
healthy and staying physically active and are using the 5210 art to bring awareness to their school.
